2017 Outstanding Single Field Facility
Calvin Falwell Field
Lynchburg Hillcats

About this Project: In 2017, SCG Fields was responsible for the complete renovation to the existing playing field at City Stadium for the Lynchburg Hillcats in Lynchburg, Virginia. SCG Fields performed the complete renovation of this Minor League Baseball field. The demolition included stripping, export, and disposal of all soils and sod from the existing playing field. Once removed, SCG established subgrade and began construction on the playing field, skinned infield, bullpens, and warning track. SCG completed the installation of a newly constructed subdrainage piping system and installation of new catch basin structure outside of the playing field. The new field profile features a 10” USGA rootzone layer over a 4” gravel layer, and lateral drainage lines that flow to the perimeter collector, which massively improved the performance of the field. New warning track, bullpens, infield clay, and uniform sod type provide a high-performance field fit for professionals. The sod, Latitude 36 Bermudagrass with Ryegrass overseed, replaced the previously mixture of grass types that had overrun the old playing surface. The infield, warning track and bullpens were also significantly upgraded with new materials and design. SCG also installed a newly upgraded irrigation system, controller, and software with wireless capability. Calvin Falwell Field at City Stadium was recognized as a “2017 Distinguished Single Field Facility” by the American Sports Builders Association (ASBA). It is home to one of the MiLB’s up and coming teams proudly built by SCG Fields.

2017 Outstanding Single Field Facility

Lakeside Field

Northwestern University

About this Project: As the playing field subcontractor for this extensive project, SCG Fields was responsible for the construction and regrading of the synthetic turf field hockey stadium located at the Lakeside Sports Complex at Northwestern University. SCG’s scope was to construct a world-class field hockey facility from the existing subgrade. SCG Fields was also responsible for the installation of infiltration trenches along the east and west sides of the playing field and the re-installation of existing subbase stone material across the entire subgrade. Once complete, SCG furnished 6″ of new aggregate base via laser grading techniques and then installed a porous asphalt layer in two lifts to extremely precise and specific FIH approved slope tolerances.

SCG Fields was also responsible to furnish and install AstroTurf A12 synthetic field hockey turf with sewn seams. This turf was installed atop a 3/8″ perforated Armacell foam pad and adhered with NORDOT adhesive.

This field was a recipient of an International Hockey Federation (FIH) Class 1 Global Pitch Certification in accordance with FIH Pitch Handbook, dated February 2014. It was also recognized as a “2017 Distinguished Single Field Facility” by the American Sports Builders Association (ASBA). Lakeside Field at Northwestern University is regarded as one of the preeminent field hockey facilities worldwide, and it was built by SCG Fields.
